A Pre-Apprenticeship in Building and Construction led Jenni Michael to continue her studies and eventually found work as a Carpenter at Loy Yang.

Jenni Michaels enrolled in a Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) with Federation Training.

‘I didn’t know what to expect given I was the only female student in a male dominated course but I loved it! I used to get a lot of stick from the boys, but I quickly proved I was as good as them’, she said.

“By the end of the course they were asking me for help! The teachers were fantastic and the other students really helped me, particularly in the beginning’.

‘I would say to any female student interested in gaining a trade to give it a go’, said Jenni.

Chris Partington, Building and Construction teacher at Federation Training said ‘Jenny was a great student: She was keen to learn and develop her skills. Over 8-10 weeks she and the other students worked in small teams to construct a cubby house. The project incorporates all of the trades including plumbing, carpentry and Joinery and painting and decorating. It’s a great project for pre apprentice students as they get to see the end result of all their hard work’.

‘We have adopted a similar project based approach with our Certificate II Engineering students who buy a kit cart and then assemble it as part of their course.
