Course Overview

This course is aimed at providing students with the skills and abilities required to meet the needs of the horticulture industry. Elective units make up the substantive course content and will develop the specific skills required to undertake many vital functions required by people employed in this industry.

This course develops and enhances the skills and knowledge to enable you to work independently or at a supervisory or managerial level, or to run your own business in the sector of the horticulture industry in which you have chosen to specialise in.

The Diploma of Horticulture reflects the role of those who manage amenity horticultural enterprises where a range of skills and knowledge across the breadth of the industry is required or personnel working in horticulture at a level requiring higher technical skills.

Qualifications And Recognition

Upon successful completion of this course students will be eligible to receive the Diploma of Horticulture.

Employment Prospects

Job roles and titles vary across different industry sectors. The course aims to provide the skills needed to work in supervisory and management roles. Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include:

  • Horticulture Supervisory and Mnagement
  • Senior Horticulturist
  • Horticulturist at a managerial level in the amenity horticulture industry
  • Horticulture Enterprise Manager or Business Manager in the parks and gardens, landscaping, turf, nursery, arboriculture and floriculture industries

Entry Requirements

 Year 12 or equivalent or qualify for mature-age entry, holder of a relevant qualification at a lower level, in which an interview would take place to make sure that you are able to enter this course.

A range of assessment methods will be used, including practical tasks, practical experiences, practical demonstrations, assignments, journals, documents/folio, problem solving, presentations, critical incident reports and written/practical assessments.

Opportunities For Further Study

Further training pathways from this qualification include any of the specialist qualifications in the Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management training package at Advanced Diploma levels.
