This year Federation Training is trialing a new way to support students in their studies. We will send weekly SMS messages with study tips, advice and reminders to help students stay motivated throughout their course.

This approach has been used in other countries and shown to be an effective way to support students’ engagement and attainment.

This is the first time we’ve tried this approach at Federation Training, so we’re starting small. We’ll send the messages to randomly selected students from a small group of courses. Afterwards we’ll see whether the messages helped students stick with their studies. We’ll also get students’ feedback about the messages: whether they found them useful, and how we can improve them in the future.

The outcomes of this trial will inform decisions about policy development and student support services in the vocational education sector.

The SMS messages are designed to be as simple and helpful as possible. But we know that not everyone will want to receive them, so any student can opt-out by simply replying STOP to any of the SMS messages.

Students’ privacy is very important. Only Federation Training and the Victorian Department of Education and Training will have access to students’ personal data or contact details.
