The Victorian Government is investing $60.5 million to develop and upgrade two of Federation Training’s major campuses in Gippsland.
The funding was announced in the 2018/19 Budget handed down by Treasurer, Tim Pallas this week.
A major $35.5 million upgrade of Federation Training’s Morwell campus will deliver market-leading training facilities to sit alongside the new Gippsland Tech School and the emerging Hi-Tech Precinct, in what will be a world-class education hub in Morwell.
In addition, a master plan and design phase will commence shortly to develop a new TAFE training facility at the Port of Sale site as part of a $25 million commitment to the local community and regional students.
Federation Training’s Interim Chief Executive Officer, Mr Grant Radford, said the funding will deliver long-awaited and much needed TAFE training infrastructure to Gippsland
“We have listened to the communities in which we operate. They want a better student experience, improved facilities, quality teachers and skills training for the jobs of today – and tomorrow,” Mr Radford said.
“This significant investment is a vote of confidence in TAFE and we are determined to begin work immediately to ensure the benefits begin to flow to our communities as soon as possible.”
Mr Radford said the funding would ensure Federation Training realigned its business model to focus on its Gippsland base.
“As part of Federation Training’s Transformation Strategy, we undertook an extensive consultation program with the Gippsland community, local businesses and industry,” Mr Radford said.
“We have a vision to be the leader in education and training, partnering with communities and industry to build a socially vibrant, economically strong Gippsland. This investment will allow our teaching staff to focus on delivering quality training courses required by industry and regional business to create job-ready graduates.”
The $35.5 million investment upgrade to Federation Training’s Morwell Campus (to be renamed as the Latrobe Campus) will see a major transformation of its existing infrastructure, in addition to the development of purpose-built training facilities, establishing it as one of the premier vocational education and training facilities in Victoria.
The $25 million investment for Sale will see a single state-of-the-art campus built at the Port of Sale following a consolidation of the current Federation Training sites in Sale and Fulham. The new campus will provide both leading education and training facilities for a range of industry and academic disciplines in line with an industry consultation process, and providing greater access to training for students in the region.
Community and stakeholder involvement in the design and planning phase will be encouraged through the development of a project group involving the Wellington Shire Council and industry representatives.
